Transdermal Patches for The Controlled-Release of Vitamin C Targeting Acne Vulgaris and Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
This project looked to address the challenge of treating acne
vulgaris (AV) and its aftereffect, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Acne
vulgaris (AV) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) are common
conditions, but current treatments can be costly, inaccessible, or cause side
effects. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid, LAA) can help both AV and PIH, but it
degrades quickly when exposed to air and UV light. This study developed zinc
oxide (ZnO)-infused thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) transdermal patches with
β-cyclodextrin (β-CyD) encapsulation to protect LAA and enable controlled
release with zero order release kinetics over a period of 10 hours.
