Biomaterials Engineering Education Research and Mentorship

In collaboration with Dr. Andrea Vernengo, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Rowan University; Dr. James Iatridis, Professor of Orthopaedics and Neurology at ISMMS; Dr. Woojin Han, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at ISMMS; Dr. Stephanie Rabile, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware; Dr. Gabriela Graziani, Assistant Professor at Università Telematica San Raffaele in Rome, Italy; and Dr. Mili Shah, Professor of Mathematics at Cooper Union.

Since 2020, I’ve been focused on innovating ways to educate students in biomedically-oriented topics, mainly biomaterials. Besides the senior partners listed, this pursuit of new pedagogy in biomaterials spans Cooper Union undergraduate and graduate students and ISMMS graduate and post-doctoral students working alongside me in engineering education endeavors. Recently, I’ve started working with post-doctoral students from the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS)

One multi-year project is the creation and implementation of hands-on, inquiry based-learning in the classroom. Students work alongside the senior collaborators to create new modules that then run in EID222 – Biomaterials or with external universities. The students who take EID222 and learn through these modules may choose to help us create new modules for future classes when they join VIPXD – Frontiers of Bioengineering. Following the undergraduate student experience in education research, the students then join the senior collaborators on translational projects, such as those listed in the Current Research Projects section of this document. Additionally, I have been studying the impact of using a technique such as this to create a pipeline to train students at a younger age to participate in much more complex translational biomaterials research.

A second project that has begun in the past year is studying the incorporation of the entrepreneurial mindset into the classroom. This externally funded project has three institutes running these activities in similar courses/methods. I have begun incorporating the entrepreneurial activities into EID222 and will assess how this new pedagogy may influence the undergraduates of Cooper Union.

Senior Unit Operations Laboratory Improvements

In collaboration with Professor Ben Davis, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Cooper Union.

This projected worked to devise a new bioreactor experiment using beer fermentation as an inexpensive model system for the senior unit operations laboratory. This work has been presented at the annual AIChE meeting twice by students of Cooper Union.
